Education situation in Myanmar is worrying

Geplaatst op: Thursday 01 June 2023

In Myanmar, summer holidays are in the months of April and May. Normally all schools start again around June 1th. However, due to the military coup, almost all schools in the country have been closed. Government school teachers are on strike, risking their lives. The monastic schools are partly open. Only children from wealthier families can attend private schools. This is already the fourth school year in a row that many children and young people cannot enjoy education. First because of the corona lockdowns and now because of the political situation.

Fortunately, the PDO High School in Mandalay, where we have been active as a foundation since 2009, is running at full speed. It is busier than ever on the school grounds. During the summer recess, the school became a haven for children and young people who were not safe in their villages. That group stayed and almost all of the children and young people who went home for the holidays have returned on 1 June. The Golden House and The Hostel are currently overcrowded. These children and young people are lucky. They can go to school in a relatively safe situation!

As a foundation, we try to support the school and our projects as best we can, with the limited resources we have as a foundation. It is not easy to find enough sponsors and donors for our work at the moment. If you want to support us, take a look under the menu item Sponsorship. Thank you very much for your help!
