Children & Youngsters

Group composition

The 400 children and young people who live in The Golden House and The Hostel form a mixed group. The youngest is four years old and the oldest eighteen. The junior staff, who live in the residential groups with the children, are nineteen to early twenties. The composition of the group is as follows:

  • All children and young people come from poor families.
  • Two thirds of the children and young people are from an ethnic minority.
  • About twenty children and young people have been removed from their homes by the government.
  • Some young people still belong to the group of 70 orphans with whom the project started.

School system

Myanmar has a primary school (grade 1 to 5), middle school (grade 6 to 9) and high school (grade 10 to 12). There is no high school in many ethnic areas. This means that parents send their children to the larger cities to complete their secondary education. There are often several reasons for this:

  • The parents cannot afford state education and education is free at the PDO High School.
  • There are no high schools in the provinces where the children and young people come from.
  • In the provinces there are conflicts with the Myanmar government and it is not safe.
  • In some provinces there is still sometimes child labor or child trafficking.

Child sponsorship

To support the living groups The Golden House and The Hostel, you can sponsor a child. This concerns healthy food, clothing and school supplies. The money will of course benefit the entire group. Monthly sponsorship is possible for 10, 20 or 30 euros per month. If you like, we can connect you to a specific child in our living groups, but we don't have to.

Click here to download the sponsor form. When we have received your form, you will receive a confirmation letter with payment details.

If you want to sponsor a specific child, you will receive a welcome letter containing the (contact) details and photo of your sponsored child. You can then maintain personal contact with your sponsor child by e-mail or Facebook Messenger. It is also possible to give a small present for your sponsor child when one of the directors or volunteers visits the project. If you would like to visit your sponsored child in Myanmar in the future, we will be happy to help you with that. That will truly be an unforgettable experience for you and your child.

Children looking for a sponsor parent

Below you will find some children and youngsters who are not yet sponsored at the moment, but for whom this is important and nice. They have generally been through a lot in their young lives and/or have parents who can hardly take care of them. Through your sponsorship you offer them prospects for the future.
